As the only Transplant Center in metropolitan Detroit exclusively servicing pediatric patients, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has a long history of providing lifesaving transplant services for children in need. The transplant program combines the expertise of nationally recognized medical and surgical experts on the medical staff who are specially trained in pediatric transplantation.  

Patients and their families who experience the services of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Transplant Center will encounter a child-friendly environment designed to put children, teens and their parents at ease. While the primary goal is improving children’s health and saving lives through transplantation, significant time and resources are also devoted to the emotional, psychological and financial needs of patients and their families.

Conditions and Treatments

Kidney transplant is recommended for children who have serious kidney dysfunction and will not be able to live without dialysis or a transplant. Some of the kidney diseases in children for which transplants are performed include those that follow below. However, not all conditions require kidney transplantation. Always consult your child's doctor for a diagnosis.

Congenital renal obstructive disorders leading to hydronephrosis including the following:

  • Megaureter
  • Posterior urethral valves
  • Prune belly syndrome
  • Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
  • Vesicoureteral reflux

Other conditions include:

  • Alport syndrome
  • Buerger disease
  • Congenital nephrotic syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Goodpasture syndrome
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • Henoch-Schönlein purpura
  • Nail-patella syndrome
  • Nephropathic and juvenile cystinosis
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Wegener granulomatosis
