The Division of Gastroenterology treats the most children for inpatient gastroenterology care in the state of Michigan. It offers comprehensive medical care and investigative services to infants, children and adolescents with gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic and nutritional disorders.

The Division includes pediatric gastroenterologists, nurse practitioners, and dietitians specialized in caring for children with gastrointestinal and liver disorders.

The Gastroenterology Division uses state-of-the-art technology for procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy, removal of foreign body, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, small intestinal biopsy, capsule endoscopy, pancreatic function studies, breath hydrogen test, pH/impedance monitoring, percutaneous gastrostomy tube insertion, variceal banding, and sclerotherapy. In addition the department offers motility studies including esophageal and anorectal manometry. Endoscopic procedures are performed in our state-of-the-art endoscopy suites at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan main campus and at the Children’s Hospital of Troy.

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition also provide expertise to several interdisciplinary programs including the Pediatric Aerodigestive Clinic. The clinic involves specialists from ENT, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Dietary, and Speech Therapy. The team approach provides care to children with a variety of airway, breathing and swallowing disorders, sleep apnea and related problems such as malnutrition and gastroesophageal reflux.


The division has ongoing clinical research studies to evaluate inflammatory bowel disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, constipation and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Diagnostic and treatment services for children with a wide range of both common and rare gastrointestinal disorders are performed.

Abdominal pain, abnormal defecation after anorectal surgeries, autoimmune hepatitis, atypical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, achalasia, biliary atresia, celiac disease , Crohn's disease, constipation and encopresis, cyclic vomiting syndrome, defecation and voiding dysfunction, eosinophilic esophagitis and gastroenteritis, failure to thrive, fatty liver disease, fecal incontinence, feeding disorders, functional abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastrointestinal bleeding, gastroparesis, Hirschsprung's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), liver disorders and liver transplantation, malabsorption, metabolic liver diseases, non-cardiac chest pain, obesity and obesity-related gastrointestinal disorders, pancreatic diseases, short-bowel syndrome, swallowing difficulties, ulcerative colitis, viral hepatitis and ulcers. The Children's Hospital of Michigan Gastroenterology Division offers a pediatric Crohn’s and Colitis Support Group and Pediatric Celiac Support Group which meet quarterly.
