DETROIT —Children’s Hospital of Michigan celebrated the completion of their brand-new hospital today after nearly three years of construction. Designed to advance pediatric health care, the hospital offers an innovative healing environment where the most vulnerable children can be cared for by pediatric specialists and teaching experts who are recognized as national leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of acutely sick and injured children.
“For 132 years Children’s Hospital of Michigan has been dedicated to caring for children. Now, we have a brand-new healing environment to support kids and their families with the best pediatric services when they need us the most” says Luanne Thomas Ewald, CEO of Children’s Hospital of Michigan. "Children’s has also expanded care beyond our hospital walls and into the communities we serve. It's all part of our mission to enhance engagement between hospitals, physicians and most importantly, our patients."
The six-story, 248,800 square-foot, $155 million investment includes key features such as a family-friendly main entrance, lobby/welcome center; a ground-level Emergency Department with 48 exam rooms and 4 trauma bays and improved parking and traffic lanes; expanded Neonatal, Pediatric and Cardiac Intensive Care units with private rooms, spacious family lounges, full bathrooms, showers and more. Included in the tower construction was an updated Surgery Department that includes renovated operating rooms, pre-operative and post-operative care areas. The overall design of the tower includes colorful brick and glass features on the building exterior and inside a dramatic two-story ceiling on the main level with distinctive cut-out wall shapes that reflect multiple colors and light.
The current hospital building to which the new critical care tower and lobby are attached was constructed in 1971 and considered a state-of-the-art hospital for children. Today’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan is home to more than 240 pediatric residents, specialists, fellows and medical students training on site daily and graduates approximately 70 total residents and fellows annually with the largest general pediatrician-training program in Michigan. Children’s Hospital of Michigan offers more than 40 pediatric medical and surgical specialty services, draws patients from nearly every Michigan County, 39 additional states, and 22 countries annually and provides the highest level of pediatric specialty care available for kids
Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients, their families, community members, DMC and Children’s Hospital of Michigan executives and staff gathered today in the hospital’s new lobby to celebrate the grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and joined in the festivities of the traditional kids holiday by wearing “merry, not scary” attire.
