Program Experience and Curriculum
The Pediatric Fellowship Program provides a comprehensive and well-balanced clinical training in all aspects of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology through the clinical care of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and participation in Sub-specialty
clinics including the Comprehensive Hemophilia Clinic (2x/month), Comprehensive Neuro-oncology Clinic (3x/month), Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinic and the Sickle Cell Clinic. The program is certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) and leds to subspecialty certification.
The first year of the fellowship program is devoted primarily to patient care with five months on the inpatient hematology/oncology service, five months in the outpatient hematology/oncology clinic, one month on the bone marrow transplant service and
one month on the inpatient consult service. During the outpatient clinic rotations, participation in the subspecialty clinics also occurs.
During the second year of the fellowship program, the fellow participates in a balance of both clinical care and the initiation of the primary fellowship research project. There is also further professional development with active participation on the
inpatient consult along with an increasing level of supervision of junior fellows.
The third year of the fellowship is designed primarily towards the conduct and completion of the fellowship research project. Oversight and supervision of the junior fellows continues to occur as well as active participation in the educational curriculum.
Educational/Patient Care Conferences
Regularly scheduled patient care conferences and didactic lectures are held each week.
- Monday Pediatric Hematology Conference - weekly review of hematology patients/cases and to educate new approaches and effective management of hematological disorders
- Multidisciplinary Pediatric Tumor Board (Wednesdays) - weekly review of multi-modality evidence based, clinical care for patients
- Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Lecture Series (Tuesdays) - weekly lectures providing a regular didactic session for faculty and fellows to improve knowledge and clinical practice in hematology/oncology. This includes regular board review
lecture series to discuss and improve the base knowledge on a specific disease in hematology/oncology.
- Children's Hospital of Michigan Fellowship Lecture Series (Wednesdays) - weekly lectures covering topics including: study design, statistical analysis and presentations of both research and faculty research projects.
- Blood and Marrow Transplant Weekly Patient Conference
- Blood and Marrow Transplant Journal Club (monthly) - monthly didactic sessions for faculty and fellows to improve knowledge and clinical practice in blood and marrow transplant. This includes novel therapies and treatment of relevant blood and marrow
transplant issues.
- Morbidity and Mortality Conference (quarterly) - Quarterly review and discussing the cases of expired patients that were admitted to the ICU and health care associated infections in detail and to understand the clinical course with used diagnostic
tools therapeutic measures and outcomes.
- Morphology Review - Peripheral slide review and discussions with faculty and fellows
- Kamanos Cancer Center Grand Rounds
- Annual Endowed Lectureships - Melissa A. Krinsky Lectures and the Kenneth Lewis Lectures in the fall of each year.
Opportunities for research are available for trainees in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division and includes the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, National Cancer Institute (designated comprehensive cancer center) and the Wayne State University
School of Medicine.
