Using advanced imaging technologies and kid-friendly protocols, the Children's Hospital of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center offers a pediatric imaging center designed entirely for kids. The department is staffed by radiologists who are board-certified and specially trained in pediatrics. Working together, they provide more than images. They offer expert interpretation and diagnosis.

The department specializes in all forms of imaging from digital X-ray and interventional radiography to body imaging and positron emission tomography (PET.)

Both waiting rooms and exam rooms are designed with kids in mind, and all procedures are tailored for the minimum amount of radiation necessary to complete the exam.


Services and Innovations

The department uses advanced technology and imaging protocols that minimize radiation exposure to children. Some technologies include:
  • Advanced Ultrasound Technology
  • Angiography Equipment
  • Digital X-ray System
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - 1.5 T and 3.0 T short bore scanner
  • 4-Slice Computed Tomography
  • (CT) Scanner

Magnetic resonance imaging tests require lying still for long periods of time that can be difficult for kids. In partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Michigan offers an initiative called Imagination Destinations, transforming MRI rooms into tranquil scenes to help reduce anxiety for kids and their families. The MRI rooms are wrapped with stickers, décor, and colorful themes that can help distract patients during testing. Featured in all four MRI prep rooms, as well as in two MRI scanner rooms, the Imagination Destination spaces each have their own theme including under the sea, outer space and campgrounds.
