Emergency Room Services and Innovations

ED Sedation Services

The Emergency Department (ED) at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan manages the hospital’s sedation service. It is dedicated to providing sedation for patients undergoing imaging studies. Pediatric emergency physicians sedate more than 2,500 patients per year as part of this service. ED faculty, staff the sedation service seven days a week. This service is an integral part of providing comprehensive and superior quality service to patients.

ED Imaging Services

A full range of radiology services are available for the evaluation of emergency patients. Two dedicated x-ray suites are located within the department. In addition, a 64-slice CT scan and the MRI suite are located adjacent to the ED. An active ultrasound and nuclear medicine service are also available as well as a PET and PET-CT scan exclusively dedicated to children.

Child Life Services

Child Life in the Emergency Department strives to reduce stress and anxiety that children and families may encounter while at the hospital. This is accomplished by providing preparation for procedures – through verbal teaching and play with medical equipment, support and distraction during procedures, and providing play opportunities to promote normal growth and development.

Social Work Services

Social work services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These services are quite valuable to the ED with staff being called upon for support in a variety of situations from trivial to extremely serious.
