The legacy of McKenna Schummer will live on after the opening of McKenna's Beauty Bar at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. McKenna fought bone cancer for the better part of two years through the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Hematology Oncology Department. During that time she developed a passion for makeup and wanted other children in the hospital to experience the same joy.
McKenna's Beauty Bar is a magical place created by McKenna just for Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients. McKenna had a clear vision on how she wanted the beauty bar to be set up and Children’s Hospital of Michigan worked hard to make her vision a reality. During the recent ribbon cutting ceremony, McKenna's family attended and cut the ceremonial ribbon. The day was full of love, celebration and happy tears as everyone in attendance witnessed McKenna's Beauty Bar being used just as she envisioned it - a place where children can go to find their courage, beauty and strength.
Unfortunately, McKenna passed away before seeing her dream realized, however, her inspiration is felt throughout McKenna's Beauty Bar located on the sixth floor of the hospital. Patients are allowed to visit the Beauty Bar at any time as long as they are accompanied by a Children's Hospital of Michigan staff member. Kids are allowed to pick out special items and either try them at the Beauty Bar or take them back to their room - either way the items are theirs to keep. In addition, any patients not able to leave their room can still benefit by having a staff member select and gather items on their behalf.
Moving forward, Children’s Hospital of Michigan will be hosting special events for patients in the Beauty Bar with guest stylists and makeup artists.
